Eighty-five percent
As Delta Flight Attendants, we prepare for and respond to emergency situations onboard to keep the traveling public safe, but who is supporting us during and after these incidents occur?
AFA’s Critical Incident Response Program (CIRP) provides robust help and benefits to assist Flight Attendants who need support following traumatic or critical incidents, on and off the aircraft.
Over the last 7 months, most critical incidents were related to unruly passengers. More than five thousand Flight Attendants representing 30 airlines completed AFA’s Unruly Passengers Survey. While the results are no surprise, they are sobering.
Eighty-five percent of respondents reported having dealt with at least one unruly passenger so far in 2021. Fifty-eight percent reported handling at least five incidents. And a shocking 17 percent reported a physical confrontation with a passenger.
Whether they escalate to physical confrontation or not, these incidents can be traumatizing. Sixty-one percent of those who experienced unruly passenger behavior reported passengers using sexist, racist and homophobic language.
We don’t have to deal with this alone. Critical incidents aren’t just unruly passengers -- they range from medical emergencies onboard, mechanical or engine failure, runway evacuations, an unexpected Flight Attendant loss, severe weather storms, and more. AFA’s Critical Incident Response Program (CIRP) has resources and support to help us, and when we secure our Flight Attendant union at Delta we’ll have even more support.
